Our Pond

We learned
the hard way
on this one!

Long before it became the rage to have water ponds in your garden, we started without the help of nurseries or all the myriad of pond books now available.

Al dug the pond and using the dirt from the hole, fashioned a hill so that we could have a waterfall into the pond. We spent days driving around the countryside looking for rocks and boulders. Doesn't that sound like fun? I'm sure that mosquitoes emailed the news of where to find fresh blood to all their friends and neighbours and maybe even relatives.

After an initial estimate of $800.00 for black pond liner, we had the brilliant idea of using swimming pool vinyl for the pond, and dying it black. So we went to a company and they graciously seamed all their scraps together to the size we needed for a very reasonable price.

Well now, the hole is dug, the rocks are hauled, the sand is laid, the liner is sculpted---lets add water, plants and little tiny fishes!!

Did you know that swimming pool liners are treated with a chemical to kill algae? It also kills little tiny fishes....several times.... before you figure it out! And *nobody* has ink to dye the vinyl. (Well one business supply company offered to sell us felt markers!!!)

By the time we learned how to keep fish and aquatic plants alive, we had to move and now someone else is enjoying what took us several years to perfect. We actually had the fish coming to the surface to ask for food and a couple would let you pet them.

Now we live in a brand new home with 1 tree. *Nothing* else! Well unless you count dried up sod that's been laid over shingles, bricks, concrete, re-bar. Need I go on. Typical builder stuff!

Oh the plan is done - well maybe if we put this here and then that would go over there and we could. . . No that's no good; it only gets morning sun. And now we're in a different hardiness zone we want to take advantage of plants that we couldn't grow before. So we better study a little. You know how it goes.

Oh well--look at what we'll be able to do this time, now that we have all the kinks ironed out. Hope the tooth fairy arrives with my money soon.

Stop by again as we develop our landscape extravaganza. For now, just picture me trying to design this on a computer using Wordperfect, Paint Shop Pro
and a ton of felt markers.

See what surprising and wonderful things,
our daughter Kim has to say about our garden. Thank you honey!
